Available Weimaraners

Illinois Chapter*

* we do not ship dogs, but if you are willing to travel to meet one of our dogs fostered in another state, then you are welcome to apply for adoption.  With the increased cost of travel, GLWR will do what we can to make it easy for potential adaptors to meet dogs.

Duke, a 1-year-old silver grey male, has experienced a lot of suffering in his short life, but things are looking up. His little emaciated body was nothing but skin and bones when he arrived at Great Lakes Weim Rescue weighing just 38 pounds. He was originally abandoned in a park in Arkansas when he was just six months old. He was taken in by a Gun Dog Rescue there where they found out he was heartworm positive. A family from Chicago adopted him along with a blue girl named Dolly. The family was supposed to get treatment for his heartworm but never did.

The family relocated to Michigan where things just went from bad to worse for little Duke. His heartworm condition still went untreated and he was not cared for properly. He became very thin and sickly and developed mange. He was treated for the mange but in the process lost all of his hair and developed open sores. He and his "sister" Dolly were moved out of the house into a cold garage due to the mange and sores.

The family finally realized that they could not provide the care that the dogs needed and contacted the Gun Dog Rescue in Arkansas to return the dogs. As that rescue was too far away to help, they contacted Great Lakes Weim Rescue for assistance. When the Great Lakes representative picked up Duke and Dolly they were both severely underweight and in poor condition. Duke's prognosis was especially bleak at the time.

Okay, now for the good news! Being the little trooper that he is, Duke has now put on several pounds, his hair coat is filling in and he is getting healthier by the day. Yeah!  His heartworm treatment is progressing well and he will be ready for his new home soon.

He has a ways to go, but a more feisty, happy little man you will not find. Duke is living his newfound life to the fullest. He has a huge personality in that little body and will steal your heart away with a single look and one of his happy puppy yips!

As you may know, heartworm treatment is expensive and like most rescues we operate with volunteers and are funded by donations. GLWR and Duke would greatly appreciate any contribution you could make to help pay for his treatment. GLWR is a 501(c)3 non-profit and your donation should be tax deductible (check with your tax preparer).

Thank you for helping Duke get the happy ending he deserves!

Update

Hi everybody, Duke here, just wanted to give you an update on my progress. I have finished my heartworm treatment and I am a completely healthy little guy! I have been with my foster family for a few weeks and I am up to 52 pounds now. I spend my day with two other weims, a pug, and four kids that take care of me. I get along great with the kids and the other dogs and would probably do better in a house that has other dogs. I am a very shy boy who relies on the other dogs, but I am slowly starting to come out of my shell. I am a very well behaved little boy and not a typical wild little one year old. I love to spend my days snuggled up with the other weims and my family. I am crate trained, I've been known to escape, but we are working on that. I do fine walking on a leash, potty trained, and starting to learn basic commands. When I'm adopted I will need to have a heartworm check in June. Do not let my sad eyes fool you I am a very loving and happy little guy that will steal your heart.

**Adoption Pending!

Adopt me! I am a ready-made good dog all ready for my new forever home. I am an adult male purebred Weimaraner who is about 4-5 years old. I have a silver coat, amber eyes, and a medium build. I have already been neutered and micro-chipped. I have been given a clean bill of health after my visit to the vet and have undergone all of the necessary tests and shots. The vet says I am good to go! I am housebroken which means I go to the bathroom outside and I have good manners inside. I know several basic commands and walk well on a leash. I am well behaved around kids, adults, and other dogs. I do well in and out of a crate. I enjoy being outside, but I am an inside dog.

I will bring along an adoption folder with all of my necessary paperwork, a leash, a collar with all of my tags, a training collar, a blanket, some pamphlets on training, a training DVD, and a treat bag. If you are interested in adopting me or if you know someone who is please call GLWR. Visit my blog soon to check on my progress!

Hello My Name is  Laredo!

I'm a 6 year old female with a grey coat and beautiful eyes. Folks on the street stop to admire me (who wouldn’t).

My first family loved me a lot, but things happen to families and mine went different directions. After that separation I wasn’t getting the attention I earned!  So I am looking for a great new home. Maybe yours?

My health is good and I am up to date on my shots and heartworm prevention. My foster dad thinks I have the greatest teeth of any dog he’s seen. I have chip even though I don’t wander off better safe I guess.

I LOVE to be near you under foot at your desk or on the couch next to you. I'm also good around other dogs and ride wonderfully in the car. I do well in my foster home even when my foster “brother” bosses me around. He seems to think I am stealing his attention. I think I could be an only dog or join a family with multiple dogs. I guess so long as I get attention I am flexible.

My manners are good, notice I don’t say great. I have on occasion helped myself to something tasty on the counter but try not to make a habit of it. I am well housebroken, and like walking on the leash. What I LOVE is running free in a yard or at the forest preserve. I make certain to come back when called. I wouldn’t want to get left behind. My move to the Big City took some getting used to but I think I am adjusting well. Lots more sights and sounds to take in.

I've got lots of love to give and fun to share, so let's get started!   Laredo

Olivia's Blog

adopted!

I'm Olivia. I am a 3 year old girl, originally from Kentucky. I came from a lovely family that had two small children to play with two other dogs just like me.  Needless to say, I get along well with other dogs and very quick to make friends with my two legged friends.  I’ve made it to Naperville, because my previous owner has suffered some recent health challenges that have prevented her from able being to care for me any longer.

I’ve adjusted quite well in my new surroundings.  I’m quite the couch potato and really like my naps. When I’m up, my new owner does take me out for runs and walks.  I like that a lot.  He tells me I’m quite good on the leash.  My Kentucky home taught me well.  I’ve also been to the local dog park and love to romp with my friends.  I’m a pretty a laid back girl, so the park is a good place to hangout.  I also know the basic commands.  My new Foster Dad likes to practice those with me. I’m great in the house and stay away from my owners stuff.  The only things I like to chew on are pull toys and bones.  I like furry squeaky toys, they don’t last very long.  I think I like them too much.  Cats could suffer the same fate as my squeaky toys, so I would not do well sharing space with any felines.  I am house trained and have not had one accident in my new Foster home

My Foster dad says that I have just a great disposition and gentle temperament.  I’m a tall girl, about 75lbs, in very good shape and looking for a permanent home that loves dogs.  I’m a lover girl and can’t wait to make a happy home, even happier.

My paw on your leg (my handshake) , Olivia
